I reached out to the Emergency Society and the President, Lara graciously provided answers to some essential questions. We got the information, so stay tuned!

Q: What’s the Emergency Society all about?

L: Pécs Emergency Society was founded in 2018 and officially launched in 2020. They only differ by their time schedules. Group A sessions are on odd weeks and Group B sessions are on even weeks.

The program typically begins with a brief introduction to the week’s subject, delivered by a doctor. Subsequently, the majority of the sessions are dedicated to skill practice or participation in simulations. Finally, each session is concluded with a Kahoot quiz, allowing students to test their understanding of the theoretical concepts covered.

Q: What kind of material will be covered?

L: Our main curriculum typically includes: cannulation, airway management, ABCDE examination and Advanced Life Support (ALS). This year we added a new Basic Trauma care session! We also have a round course at the end of the the semester to recap all the skills learned throughout.

Q: And what’s the timetable like?

You can check the colour-coded timetable below.

Q: Will there be an exam or testing session at the end?

L: As previously stated, each session is concluded with a Kahoot quiz and at the end of the semester, those with the highest accumulated points receive a special surprise.

Q: Can students request a certificate of participation after competing the semester’s session?

L: Absolutely. Students who meet the criteria (attendance within specified limits) are eligible to receive a certificate of participation upon completion of the semester’s sessions.

Q: Any plans for the semester?

L: This semester, keep an eye out on potential additional workshops with other societies.

Q: Any other events hosted by the PTE Surgical Society that students can expect during the year?

L: Throughout the academic year, the Emergency society hosts various student-centered events. In the fall semester, we assist in organising Catastrophe Day, an educational event focused on emergency preparedness.

Additionally, every semester includes an ultrasound course in collaboration with the radiology department. This course teaches students how to use ultrasound machines effectively, particularly in emergency situations. Participants engage in hands-on practice sessions focusing on critical techniques such as the Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (FAST) ultrasound, enhancing their proficiency in emergency diagnostics and care.

That’s it, dear readers. Students organise some of the best motives we have here at PTE and this is just another one of them. I personally attended a semester’s sessions in 2021 and had a great time learning with many familiar faces. While I have not yet had the opportunity to perform any of my skills in a real-life situation, the information I learned with the Emergency Society was particularly helpful when I had Anaesthesia and Intensive care and Paediatrics 2, both in the 10th semester. Spots are limited and offered on a first come, first serve basis here, so take the plunge and immerse yourself in this experience.

If you would like to register, click the link here and sign up.
